Rickie Fowler’s Scotty Cameron Newport 2 prototype putter was on center stage at THE PLAYERS Championship. The young winner finished his final round 6-under on the last six holes, including an epic birdie-birdie-eagle finish. Closing off his round so perfectly allowed him to force his way into the playoff, which he won with a 5-foot birdie putt on no. 17.
Fowler has been using his current putter for just over a year, after using it for the first time at the 2014 Northern Trust Open. Many of the people who watched his incredible comeback remain unaware of the interesting backstory behind the putter.
Scotty Cameron’s website explains how Fowler has been using the brand’s putters for over 11 years, and that Fowler visited their Putter Studio in advance of the 2014 season. The purpose of this visit was to analyze his stroke and setup with Scotty Cameron and fitting specialist Paul Vizanko.
The cameras were able to identify a flaw in Fowler’s setup before long.
Working under the Putter Studio’s high-speed cameras and dissecting the video analysis, the 2015 PLAYERS champ uncrossed a putting setup that was all crossed up (his lower body and upper body were going in opposite directions) and came away with an appreciation for simplicity. It was time to dial it all back to basics. Including his putter.
