Phil Mickelson is one of the most prolific players on the PGA Tour when it comes to holing out shots. He did it more times in the 2015 Presidents Cup than some players do in their lifetimes. However, Thursday’s round at the CareerBuilders Challenge in the Coachella Valley produced something we’ve not seen before.
An innovative tweak on the classic hitting it past the pin and the dragging it back towards the hole, Mickelson made use of the flag itself. Playing onto the eighth green at La Quinta CC, Mickelson’s approach collided directly with the flag. Usually when this happens, or the ball caroms off the flagstick, much of the applied spin is lost, usually leading to a less-than-ideal outcome (think Tiger Woods at the Masters in 2013).
In this recent case, however, the ball retained most of its backspin, and spun back around 15 feet into the hole for an eagle. You really have to see it to believe it!
