Masters champion Jordan Speith got off to a great start at the Colonial Country Club Course yesterday. On home turf, Speith sunk a 20-footer from just off the green for a birdie on the 18th, finishing with a solid 6-under 64.
His performance put him alongside three others sharing the lead after Thursday at the Crowne Plaza Invitational.
“I had a few of those on the back nine, a few good looks where I knew what the putt was doing, I just didn’t match the line and speed right,” Spieth said. “I was getting a little frustrated through 17 there. I was like just one more look. I didn’t really count (18) as a look, but maybe more like luck, and we’ll take it.”
His final birdie came just after 8pm, putting him level with Kevin Na, Boo Weekley and Ryo Ishikawa.
Spieth received a massive welcome as he commenced his first of consecutive tournaments in his home of North Texas since earning his green jacket. When his approach on 18 rolled off the back, he was surrounded by friends and family, among many other fans.
