Looking ahead to Thursday’s opening round of the PLAYERS Championship, the top field features the two top players in the world. Jason Day will play alongside Jordan Spieth and McIlroy as they begin their journey towards winning a share of the largest prize fund in any golf competition. $10m was distributed between the winners in 2014.
Here are the four top groups to keep any eye on at TPC Sawgrass on Thursday (all times are Eastern).
8.39am – Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth and Jason Day
Although McIlroy and Spieth didn’t get to showdown at the WCG-Match Play last weekend, but the two will have an opportunity to face off on the opening two days of the Players. The duo will be joined by Jason Day, currently world No. 7, who was sent home from San Francisco in a surprising 3-0 defeat. Funnily enough, Day performed better over his first three matches than Rory McIlroy, who went on to win.
1.17pm – Justin Rose, Justin Johnson and Zack Johnson
With a T2 finish at Augusta and a victory at the Zurich Classic under his belt, Rose will no doubt be eager to take this one. Dustin Johnson has also been showing solid form recently, demonstrated by his WGC win at Doral. Those two will be joined by Zach Johnson, who was runner up at the PLAYERS in 2012.
