After a few days of uncertainty following Rory McIlroy’s tumble, the world No. 1 announced on Wednesday that he will not be competing in the Open on the Old Course at St. Andrews, Scotland, next week.
The Northern Irishman posted a photo to his Instagram account showing his foot and ankle in a walking boot after he suffered a ruptured ankle ligament during a casual game of soccer with his friends near his home town of Belfast.
The four-time major champion, who triumphed at the British Open in Hoylake, England, in 2014, would have risked missing out on defending his title in the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational (August 6-9) and the PGA Championship, the final major of the season, which takes place the following week.
