Rory McIlroy Starts Strong in Abu Dhabi

Rory McIlroy made an excellent start to his opening tournament of 2016 with a six-under-par 66 in the first round of the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship on Thursday.

A couple of bogeys somewhat let him down on the front nine, but they were more than compensated for by the presence of eight birdies.

Take a look at McIlroy’s scorecard from the opening match in the UAE.

The European Tour tweeted the world No. 3’s first drive of the year on the 10th hole.

The Ulsterman wasted no time in making some strokes. On the par-5 10th, his second shot took him into a greenside bunker. He managed to get up and down from there, sinking a 15-foot putt to claim his first birdie of the day.

McIlroy continued his excellent start to the year with another successive birdie, as summed up by ESPN’s Jason Sobel:

His birdie putt on the par-three 12th lipped out, stopping him from getting his third consecutive birdie. He gave a stroke back on the 13th after three-putting for a bogey.

However, he didn’t let these two holes take away his early-round momentum. McIlroy proceeded to birdie the difficult 14th, before holing a massive putt for a birdie on the par-three 15th.
